Sale Chamber Orchestra was formed in April 1978 by the late John Walker-Jones (1949-1985), assistant principal viola in the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. It now attracts members from all over Greater Manchester and north Cheshire. The orchestra performs about three concerts a year in Sale itself, and occasional concerts further afield. Summer 2008 saw the orchestra performing a very well received concert in Keswick. We take the music seriously, but not ourselves. The average playing ability tends toward the better end, but less experienced players will find support, advice and encouragement should they need it. Playing in a string orchestra is a great way to develop your technique and musicality, whilst enjoying some challenging, but rewarding music. Unlike playing in a symphony orchestra, more time can be given to matters beyond the notes, specific to strings. Expect to spend time on interpretation, intonation, bowing, sound, ensemble, and playing as a team. But also expect to have some fun, a pleasant chat at break, and maybe go away inspired to do a little more practice before the next week. Of course, it’s nice to occasionally bring in other instrumentalists, and the 2004/2005 season saw the orchestra tackling the entire cycle of Beethoven Symphonies. We also occasionally accompany choirs, and enjoy a close relationship with Sale Choral Society and the Manchester Bach Choir in particular. It’s also been a tremendous pleasure to join forces with the very talented players of the Manchester Youth String Orchestra. Being a relatively small ensemble everyone soon gets to knows everyone else, and it’s a particularly friendly orchestra. We also look to involve food and/or drink with our music making, and other social activities regularly feature on the calendar.
